Indigenous people, the oldest inhabitants of Australia, have been creating their art for centuries. Their works reveal much about ancient beliefs, telling stories about their ancestors, animals, and tribal life. Aborigines also often employ abstract forms, in which they do not attempt to reflect nature, but instead utilize patterns, geometric shapes, and curved lines. One of the characteristic elements of Aboriginal art is the dot painting technique . These works are designed to lack depth, and the patterns—in this case, colored dots—are intended to form a larger whole, creating a colorful composition.

Aborigines used earthy colors obtained from plants and minerals. They painted with their fingers, sticks, and feathers. Brushes were made from grass, palm leaves, or chewed twigs.

A common theme in Aboriginal paintings is the so-called 'dreamtime' - a magical time flowing parallel to reality in which their ancestors were created.
