How to prepare your child for returning to school

It's no wonder that even the most organized parents struggle to figure out how to dress their child during the transitional period . Every year, both the Polish spring and autumn bring unpredictable weather conditions. We must be prepared for anything – beautiful, sunny days, or gray and frosty ones full of rain and strong winds. Furthermore, the weather can change from day to day like a kaleidoscope. To ensure your little ones' comfort, prepare a versatile autumn and spring wardrobe that will work in both sun and rain.

Our capricious spring surprises us with a new twist every day. One day the bright sun strips us of our coats, the next it starts snowing. Adding to this are frequent rains and piercingly cold winds. The weather isn't much better in autumn: sometimes it reminds us of summer, and other times it reminds us of the rapidly approaching white reality. To navigate this weather maze and dress our little one appropriately, two simple rules come to our aid:

  1. We dress the scarecrow in layers
  2. We dress a newborn according to the principle "Just like me plus one"

1. How to dress your baby during the transition period - in layers!

Dressing in layers is extremely practical, year-round. You can always take something off. On colder autumn or spring days, you should be able to wear about three layers, depending on the thickness of the fabric and the way you dress.

Remember to avoid layers of clothing that are too close together. The space between the clothes traps warm air, warming the baby.

2. How to Dress a Baby - Like Me Plus One

How do we decipher this mysterious code? Simple! Since we're only wearing a T-shirt and sweatshirt, we shouldn't add several extra layers for fear of the baby getting cold. Dress the baby as you would yourself, with just one extra layer. For a baby in a stroller, this layer could be a baby blanket or a stroller cover.

This rule applies primarily to newborns. Walking babies can be dressed exactly the same as adults. However, if an older child decides to have fun on the field or playground, consider removing a layer of clothing to prevent sweating.

How to dress a baby during the transition period?

Depending on your baby's age, you can start with a baby onesie , a romper, or a T-shirt. The undergarments should be fitted to the body, which will protect your baby from wind. At the same time, the layer touching the skin should be made of breathable cotton. The next layer can be a romper for a newborn if you're dressing them over a onesie. For older babies, you can wear a short- or long-sleeved baby T-shirt and a warmer sweatshirt or sweater over it. To create a tight, windproof cover, tuck the T-shirt into tights, the sweatshirt into pants, and for wider legs, you can pull socks over them.

Walking babies can be outfitted with a zip-up hoodie. When the weather warms up, the hoodie can be unzipped, and if a cold wind starts blowing, the hood will provide additional protection for their heads.

Outerwear for a child in the transition period

If winter has just started giving way to spring, or the autumn days suggest that summer won't see us until next year, a baby jacket will definitely come in handy. A lightly insulated baby jacket is perfect for colder days, and a classic waterproof parka for warmer days. In case of rain, a parka will protect your little one from moisture and wind without overheating. Instead of a jacket, you can wrap your little one in a "teddy bear" pajama suit while in the stroller, and protect the stroller with a rain cover.

Don't overheat your little one with warm winter hats. Instead, put a thinner hat on your child, and if their neck is exposed, a scarf or thin shawl. You can always add a hood from a sweatshirt or jacket to their head.

What to take with you on a walk with your child?

Plan where you're going and for how long. It's a good idea to bring extra clothes for younger children—they might get wet, splashed, or sweaty.

During your walk, you will find the following especially useful:

  • extra T-shirt,
  • leggings,
  • socks,
  • and for little ones also underwear.

What to pay attention to in the rooms

How should you dress your child for a walk in spring and autumn? Even if the weather is nice and you can safely leave the house in just a T-shirt, consider whether you'll be staying indoors in a cold building. Bring a sweatshirt or blanket, which will also be useful in case of a change in the weather.

Once you're inside a room at room temperature, remove your child's outerwear, even if they're sleeping. Undressing your child in the car is also crucial, and it's not just about the risk of overheating. Puffy jackets prevent the seat belts from fitting snugly around the child, creating a serious risk of accidents. Instead of a jacket, you can cover your child with a blanket once they're buckled into the car seat. An interesting solution is to use a blanket with belt holes, which, thanks to this feature, also covers the child's back.

How to tell if your child is dressed appropriately

An overheated baby may be fussy, have a red face, and a sweaty head. If these signs aren't visible, the best method is to touch the back of the baby's neck. If the body is visibly sweaty, remove one layer of clothing and replace the remaining layers with dry ones if necessary. After 10 minutes, check the back of the baby's neck again. Similarly, if the back of the baby's neck is cold, your baby may need extra clothing.

Even if the unpredictable weather is a bit unsettling, don't be afraid to take a walk. We can go outside even in light rain; we just need to be properly prepared. Remember that hardened children are more resistant to illness , and rumor has it that children who jump in puddles are much happier. So dress in layers, make sure to protect your head from the wind and rain, and enjoy the time spent together, regardless of the weather.
